What is a sensory swing?

A sensory swing is a soft fabric swing, usually shaped like a cocoon, teardrop or hammock, that wraps around a child as they swing, sway or spin gently. The enclosed shape creates a cozy, quiet space, which is why many families use one as a calm-down or reading spot after active play.

Benefits

Why Kids Love Sensory Swings

Movement

Swinging, swaying and spinning give kids the movement many of them crave, especially on indoor days.

Balance

Gentle motion engages the vestibular system, the balance sense in the inner ear, which supports coordination.

A Cozy Retreat

The snug, enclosed shape blocks out some of the busy room around it and feels like a private hideout.

Wind-Down Time

Many children find slow, rhythmic swaying calming after active play or before quiet time.

Imaginative Play

A cocoon becomes a spaceship, a nest or a reading nook.

Uses Your Climber

Our sensory swings hang from the climber you already own, with no ceiling hook or drilling.

FAQs

Sensory Swing Questions

What is a sensory swing?

A sensory swing is a soft fabric swing, often shaped like a cocoon, teardrop or hammock, that wraps around a child as they swing, sway or spin gently. Many children like the snug, enclosed feeling, and it doubles as a cozy spot to rest or read.

What are the benefits of a sensory swing?

Swinging, swaying and spinning give children movement input that supports balance and body awareness. The enclosed shape creates a quiet, cozy space, which many children find calming after active play.

What age is a sensory swing for?

It depends on the swing. Our baby and toddler hammock swing is made for 6 to 36 months, and our climber sensory swings are made for toddlers through early school age. Always check the age and weight limits for each swing.

Can I use a sensory swing indoors without a ceiling hook?

Yes. Avenlur sensory swings hang from our climbers and the Spruce swing frame, so there is no ceiling hook, doorway bar or drilling.

Which sensory swing fits my Avenlur climber?

The large-climber sensory swing fits Large Magnolia, Large Chestnut, Alpine and Sweetgum. The wall-climber swing fits Grove, Walnut, Walnut Modular, Neem, Betula and Sweetgum Jumbo. The teardrop hammock fits Grove, Walnut, Neem and Betula. None fit the Medium Magnolia or Medium Grove.

Is there an outdoor sensory swing?

Our Sycamore backyard swing sets include a nest swing, a wide saucer-style swing that kids can lie in, sway and spin on outdoors.

Are sensory swings safe?

Use a sensory swing only on a compatible frame, follow the weight limits, keep the area around it clear, place a soft mat underneath and supervise young children.
