Safety

Baby and Toddler Swing Safety

Buckle the harness every time

Babies and young toddlers should always ride in a bucket seat with the harness fastened.

Stay close

Keep swings low and gentle for little ones, and stay within arm's reach.

Check age and weight limits

Each swing and seat lists its limits. Spruce, for example, is made for 6 months to 3 years, up to 33 lb.

Clear the swing zone

Keep about six feet clear in front and behind, indoors and out, and use a soft mat or ground cover.

Anchor outdoor sets

Any backyard frame with swings should be anchored to the ground.

Inspect regularly

Check ropes, straps, hooks and bolts each season, and replace worn parts.

FAQs

Baby and Toddler Swing Questions

When can a baby use a swing?

Most babies are ready for a swing with a bucket seat and harness once they have good head control and can sit with support, usually around 6 months. The Spruce indoor swing is made for 6 months to 3 years. Always follow the age and weight limits for each swing.

What is the best swing for a toddler?

For indoors, a swing with its own stand, like the Spruce, needs no ceiling hook. For the backyard, a toddler-sized swing set with a low beam and a bucket seat is the safest start, and you can switch to a belt seat around age 3.

Can I use a baby swing indoors?

Yes. An indoor swing with its own stand works in any room with enough clearance in front and behind. Place a soft mat underneath and keep the swing arc clear of furniture.

Can I add a baby swing to my existing swing set?

Often, yes. Avenlur sells baby and bucket seats made for the Forest, Sycamore and Craftsman swing sets, plus seats that fit other playsets. Check that the seat fits your frame before ordering.

When should a toddler switch from a bucket seat to a belt swing?

Usually around age 3, once your child can hold on reliably with both hands and sit steadily without support.

How much space does a toddler swing set need?

Plan for the frame plus about six feet of clear space in front of and behind the swings, and six feet at the base of any slide.

Are baby swings safe?

Baby swings are safe when they suit your child’s age and weight, the harness is fastened, the frame is stable and an adult is watching. Avenlur playsets and swings are tested to ASTM and CPSIA standards.
