Safety Zone and Surfacing

Following the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's home playground guidance, plan for:

• Clear space around the set: At least 6 feet in every direction from the frame and the end of the slide.

• Extra room for swings: In front of and behind each swing, leave clear space equal to twice the height of the swing beam. A 7 foot beam needs about 14 feet in front and 14 feet behind.

• Soft surfacing: Install the set over at least 9 inches of loose fill such as wood mulch, wood chips or rubber mulch, covering the whole safety zone. Grass and packed dirt do not absorb falls well.

• Level ground and anchoring: Set the frame on level ground and anchor any set with swings.
