What makes a playset right for a toddler?

A toddler outdoor playset should have low platforms with guardrails, a short and gentle slide, wide steps or a ramp instead of a tall ladder, and a bucket seat if it has swings. It should sit on a soft, shock-absorbing surface with clear space all around, and suit your child's age and weight.

Buying guide

What to Look for in a Toddler Playset

Low platforms and rails

Toddlers are still learning to judge height. Low decks with guardrails keep falls short.

Short, gentle slides

A short wavy slide with a flat exit is easier to climb onto and gentler to land from.

Easy ways up

Wide steps, ramps and climbing stairs suit toddlers better than tall vertical ladders.

Room to grow

Sets that take add-ons or let you swap a bucket seat for a belt swing last past the toddler years.

Built for outdoors

Choose sets made for weather. Our indoor/outdoor sets use treated cedar; our indoor sets are pine and should stay inside.

Fits your yard

Measure the footprint plus about 6 feet of clear space around it before you buy.

Safety

Setting Up a Toddler Playset Safely

Put a soft surface underneath

Use wood chips, mulch, sand or rubber mulch at least 9 inches deep, or rubber safety tiles. Grass and packed dirt are not enough.

Clear the use zone

Keep at least 6 feet clear on every side, free of fences, trees and other equipment.

Anchor and level it

Set the playset on level ground and anchor it as the manual describes so it cannot tip.

Stay close

Toddlers need an adult within reach on climbers, slides and swings.

Check it each season

Tighten bolts, check for splinters and look over ropes and seats before each play season.

Look for safety testing

Avenlur playsets are tested to ASTM and CPSIA standards.

FAQs

Toddler Outdoor Playset Questions

What age is an outdoor playset for?

Toddler outdoor playsets are usually made for about 18 months to 5 years. Look for low platforms, short gentle slides and a bucket swing for younger toddlers. Always check the age range and weight limit on each product.

What is the best outdoor playset for a toddler?

The best toddler playset has a low platform with guardrails, a short slide, easy steps and room to add a bucket swing. For small yards, a compact play tower like the Aloe or a foldable climber like the Juniper works well. For bigger yards, a toddler swing set like Forest Small grows with your child.

What should go under an outdoor playset?

Use a shock-absorbing surface such as wood chips, mulch, sand or rubber mulch at least 9 inches deep, or rubber safety tiles. Grass and packed dirt do not absorb falls well. Extend the surfacing at least 6 feet around the playset.

How much space does a toddler playset need?

Plan for the playset footprint plus about 6 feet of clear space on every side, and more in front of and behind swings. Measure your yard before choosing a size.

Can indoor playsets be used outside?

Our indoor sets are pine and should stay inside. For backyard play, choose an indoor/outdoor version made from treated cedar, such as the Juniper, Magnolia or Chestnut indoor/outdoor sets.

Do toddler playsets need to be anchored?

Yes. Any outdoor playset with swings or climbing should be anchored or set on level, stable ground following the manual, so it cannot tip.

Will my toddler outgrow an outdoor playset?

Small play towers suit toddlers and preschoolers. If you want one set to last longer, choose one that takes add-ons and lets you swap a bucket seat for a belt swing as your child grows.
