What is Montessori furniture?

You don’t need a whole Montessori room: a few well-chosen pieces make a big difference.

Kids can get in and out of their seat, choose an activity and put it away on their own.
Every toy has a place, which makes clean-up simple and choices clear.
Kitchen towers and weaning tables invite toddlers into cooking and meals.
Simple wood furniture keeps the space calm and uncluttered.
Adjustable and convertible pieces keep fitting as your child grows.

Montessori furniture is child-sized furniture that lets children do things for themselves: low tables and chairs they can sit at without help, low open shelves where they can choose and return their own toys, and tools like kitchen towers that bring them into everyday family life. The goal is independence, order and real participation.
Most families start with a child-sized table and chair, a low shelf for a few toys, a kitchen tower or step stool, and a space for movement such as a Pikler triangle. Add an easel, a reading nook or a desk as your child grows. You don’t need everything at once.
Many families start around 6 months, when babies begin sitting and eating solids, with a weaning table or activity table. A kitchen tower usually comes around 18 months, and a table and chairs for crafts and meals from about 1 to 2 years.
A high chair holds a baby at the family table, which is helpful for early solids. A weaning table is low enough for a toddler to climb into and out of a chair on their own, which encourages independence at meals and snacks. Many families use a high chair first and add a weaning table once their child walks and sits steadily.
Your child’s feet should rest flat on the floor with knees at about a right angle, and the tabletop should sit around belly-button height when they’re seated. Adjustable tables like the Adrian, which goes from 14.76" to 20.9", grow with your child. See our table and chairs guide for sizing by age.
Keep it simple. A few toys or activities, each with its own spot, are easier for a toddler to choose from and put away than a full toy box. Rotate toys every week or two to keep interest high.
Yes. Choose pieces that do more than one job, such as a kitchen tower that converts into a desk, an activity center that becomes a table, or an easel that folds flat.
No. Child-sized furniture helps any child do more on their own, whether or not you follow Montessori at home.
