Classroom Cubbies

Wooden cubby storage for preschools, nurseries and Montessori classrooms. Each child gets a named space for a coat, a bag and a change of clothes, at a height they can reach without help.

The 48 inch preschool storage locker is our standard unit, and the quad cubby suits smaller rooms and home entryways.

Wooden Classroom Cubbies and Coat Storage

Arrival and pickup are the busiest ten minutes of a classroom day. Cubbies are what keep them from becoming chaotic: every child has one named space, they hang their own coat, and the floor stays clear of bags.

The independence matters as much as the tidiness. A child who can reach their own hook manages their own things, which is the practical life side of Montessori applied to a coat rather than a work tray.

Sizing a Cubby Unit

Count one space per child, plus a couple spare for visitors and staff. A compartment should take a folded coat, a backpack and a change of clothes without being crammed, since anything overstuffed gets emptied onto the floor within a week.

Hooks and top shelves should be within reach of the shortest child using them. Anything above that height is adult storage, whatever it was intended for.

Where to Put Them

Cubbies work best along the wall nearest the door, with enough floor space for several children and a parent to stand at once. About three feet of clear space in front avoids a queue backing into the room.

In a smaller room or a home entryway, a compact unit against a wall does the same job for a handful of children.

What to Look For

  • Reachable height: Hooks and shelves a child can use unaided, or the unit becomes a staff job.

  • Compartment size: Room for a coat, a bag and spare clothes together.

  • Labeling: A name or photo on each space is what makes a cubby a child's own rather than a shared shelf.

  • Stability: Children pull on cubby edges to balance while taking off boots. A wide base matters, and tall units should be secured to the wall.

  • Cleaning: Wipe clean finishes, given wet coats and muddy boots arrive daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubbies do I need?

One per child, plus two or three spare for visitors and staff. Units can be placed side by side along a wall as a group grows.

What height should cubbies be?

Low enough that the shortest child can reach their own hook and shelf unaided. Ours are built at child height for that reason.

Will a coat, bag and spare clothes fit in one space?

Yes. Compartments are sized for all three, which is what stops the floor filling up at pickup. Exact dimensions are on each product page.

Can cubbies be used at home?

Yes. A compact unit in an entryway or bedroom gives children the same independence with coats, shoes and school bags.

Do you supply schools directly?

Yes, including preschools, nurseries, Montessori schools and homeschool groups, and we can quote on larger orders.

Does assembly take long?

Cubby units arrive flat packed with pre-drilled hardware and take one adult about an hour. Everything carries our five-year warranty.
