Classroom Chairs
Wooden Classroom Chairs, Sized by Seat Height
Buy chairs by seat height, not by age. Two children turning three can differ by four inches, and the chair that fits one has the other either dangling or perched. Seat height is the measurement that decides whether a child sits and works or fidgets and slides.
The test is simple. Sitting back in the chair, a child's feet should rest flat on the floor with their thighs parallel to it and knees at about a right angle. From there, the tabletop should sit at roughly elbow height.
Which Seat Height?
A 6 inch seat suits the youngest toddlers, usually around 18 months to two and a half. An 8 inch seat covers older toddlers and young preschoolers. Taller seats follow for preschool and early elementary.
For a mixed age room, order two heights rather than averaging. A chair that is right for nobody is worse than two sets that are right for most.
Armrests, Stacking and Wear
Chairs with handles or armrests help a younger child position themselves and get in and out without tipping the chair. They also make chairs easier for staff to carry and stack at the end of the day.
Classroom chairs get dragged rather than lifted, which is what wears them out. Solid wood frames and smooth feet take that better than light frames, and they stay quiet on hard floors.
Buying for a Classroom
-
Match to your tables: Seat height and table height work as a pair. Choose both together.
-
Order two heights: Mixed age rooms need a small and a large rather than a compromise.
-
Count spares: Add a couple beyond your seat count for visitors, staff and breakages.
-
Storage: Check stacking height against the space you have for end of day clearing.
-
Finishes: Non-toxic and wipe clean, for furniture that is cleaned daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
What seat height do I need?
The child should sit with feet flat on the floor and knees at about a right angle. Six inches suits the youngest toddlers, eight inches older toddlers and young preschoolers, with taller seats for preschool and early elementary.
Should I buy by age or by height?
By height. Children of the same age vary widely, and the fit is what determines whether they sit comfortably enough to concentrate.
What table height goes with each chair?
Roughly elbow height when the child is seated. Our sizing guide lists matching table and chair heights by age group.
Are the chairs suitable for daily classroom use?
Yes. Solid wood construction and finishes that stand up to repeated cleaning, built for preschool and nursery use rather than occasional home use.
Do you supply schools directly?
Yes, including preschools, nurseries, Montessori schools and homeschool groups, and we can quote on larger orders.
Do chairs arrive assembled?
They arrive flat packed with pre-drilled hardware and assemble in minutes. Everything carries our five-year warranty.
