A jungle gym is one of the few toys a child can use every single day for years. But "jungle gym" covers everything from a toddler climbing frame that fits in a living room corner to a backyard structure with swings and monkey bars. The right one comes down to two things: your child's age and the space you have. This guide matches the two.
What Is a Jungle Gym?
A jungle gym is a climbing structure that combines several ways to play in one frame: usually a ladder or climbing wall, a slide, and often monkey bars, a rope ladder or a swing. Indoor jungle gyms, sometimes called indoor play gyms, are sized for playrooms and made from wood with indoor finishes. Outdoor jungle gyms are built from weather-resistant wood for the backyard.
A jungle gym is different from a Pikler triangle, which is a single climbing piece, and from a swing set, which centers on swings. For how Pikler pieces work, see our Montessori climbers guide.
The Jungle Gym Finder: Age by Space
Find your child's age in the left column, then read across to the space you have.
| Age | Small space | Medium space | Large space or backyard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 months to 3 years | Juniper, a foldable climber and swing | Cherry, a low 5-in-1 gym | Alpine Adventure, with three height settings |
| 2 to 6 years | Magnolia Medium | Bush 6-in-1 or Magnolia Large | Palm, for outdoors or a large indoor space |
| 2 to 8 years and up | Grove, wall-mounted, folds to 14 inches deep | Chestnut Medium | Chestnut Large, or the Outdoor Chestnut in cedar |
Always check the age range and weight limit for each jungle gym, and measure your space with room to spare.
Indoor Jungle Gyms
An indoor jungle gym brings climbing into the house, which matters most in winter and on rainy days. Here is what each of ours offers:
Cherry 5-in-1: just 43 inches tall, with a ramp, ladder, arch and slide, for ages 18 months to 5. A good first jungle gym for young toddlers.
Alpine Adventure: adjusts to three heights, about 47, 55 and 63 inches, with a slide and a hideaway, for ages 18 months to 6. It grows taller as your child does.
Magnolia: a 7-in-1 with monkey bars, a rock wall, a rope ladder, a slide and a swing, for ages 2 to 6. The Medium is about 52 by 43 inches; the Large about 57 by 48.
Bush 6-in-1: a slide, rock climbing wall, rope ladder, swing and monkey bars in a frame about 49 by 41 inches and 59 inches tall, for ages 2 to 6.
Chestnut: an 8-in-1 foldable jungle gym for ages 2 to 8, holding up to 110 pounds per child. The Medium is about 70 by 49 inches; the Large about 89 by 57.
Grove: an 8-in-1 that mounts to the wall and folds up to 14 inches deep, for ages 2 to 11. The best indoor jungle gym when floor space is tight.

Outdoor Jungle Gyms
Outdoors, a jungle gym needs weather-resistant wood and a soft surface underneath. The Outdoor Chestnut is made from cedar and folds for winter storage. The Palm is a 5-in-1 with a 4-foot slide, sized for small backyards, patios and decks, for ages 2 to 8. The Juniper Indoor and Outdoor folds and moves easily between the playroom and the yard, for ages 1 to 7. For backyard space planning, see our small backyard guide.
Can an Indoor Jungle Gym Go Outside?
Only if it is made for both. Indoor jungle gyms like the Chestnut are made from pine, which is not designed for rain, sun and frost. Choose a set built for outdoor use, like the Outdoor Chestnut in cedar, or one rated for both, like the Palm and the Juniper Indoor and Outdoor.
Montessori Jungle Gyms
A Montessori jungle gym follows the same ideas as other Montessori climbers: natural wood, simple open-ended pieces and child-led movement. Instead of a toy that tells children how to play, it offers several routes up and down, and children choose their own challenge each time. Every Avenlur jungle gym is designed with that approach in mind.
Setting Up a Jungle Gym Safely
Indoors: place a thick, non-slip mat underneath and around the jungle gym, keep it away from windows, furniture and shelves, and check that any folding locks are engaged before play.
Outdoors: keep at least 6 feet clear around it, and use protective surfacing such as 9 inches of wood chips or mulch or 6 inches of shredded rubber. Grass alone is not enough.
Wall-mounted gyms: anchor into wall studs exactly as the manual specifies.
Always: follow the age range and weight limit, supervise young climbers, and check bolts and hardware regularly.
Your Jungle Gym Questions, Answered
What age is a jungle gym for?
Small indoor jungle gyms start from around 18 months, and larger ones suit ages 2 to 8. Some, like the wall-mounted Grove, are designed for children up to age 11. Choose by your child's current climbing ability and the age range on the product.
Are indoor jungle gyms safe?
Yes, when matched to the child's age, placed on a soft mat with clear space around them, assembled exactly as instructed and used with supervision. Look for safety-tested designs with stated weight limits.
Are jungle gyms worth it?
For most active children, yes. A jungle gym is used daily, builds strength, balance and confidence, gives children somewhere to climb other than the furniture, and lasts for years as they find new ways to play on it.
How much space do you need for an indoor jungle gym?
Measure the jungle gym's footprint, then add a clear landing area around it, especially at the bottom of the slide. Compact designs like the Magnolia Medium need about 52 by 43 inches of floor before clearance; wall-mounted designs like the Grove fold to 14 inches deep.
What is the difference between a jungle gym and a playset?
The terms overlap. A jungle gym usually centers on climbing, with a slide and monkey bars; a playset or swing set usually centers on swings, often with a deck or playhouse. Many designs combine both.
What is the best indoor jungle gym for toddlers?
One low enough to climb on their own, with a gentle slide and a stated age range starting at 18 months to 2 years. The Cherry and the Alpine Adventure are designed for young toddlers.
