Safety and Testing

Safety and Testing

When you bring home something your child will climb, swing on or play with every day, you want to know it was built with safety in mind. This page explains what the testing on our listings means, which products are tested and what to check at home.

The short answer: many Avenlur climbers, Swedish ladders and play pieces are tested to ASTM and CPSIA standards, and each listing says so when it is. Every listing also gives an age range and, for climbers, weight limits. Testing is one part of safe play: the right age, a fitted mat, supervision and a quick check before play matter just as much.

What It Means

ASTM and CPSIA, Explained

ASTM standards

ASTM International publishes safety standards for products like toys and home play equipment. They cover hazards such as sharp edges, small parts, stability and strength.

CPSIA

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act is US law for children's products. It limits lead and certain phthalates and requires third-party testing and a Children's Product Certificate.

Questions Parents Ask

Safety and Testing FAQs

What does tested to ASTM and CPSIA standards mean?

ASTM International publishes voluntary safety standards for products like toys and home play equipment. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) is US law for children's products, covering limits on lead and certain phthalates, third-party testing and a Children's Product Certificate.

Which Avenlur products are tested to ASTM and CPSIA standards?

The products listed on this page state it on their listings. For any other product, check its listing or contact us before you buy.

Do I still need to supervise if a climber is tested?

Yes. Testing checks how a product is made. It doesn't replace an adult nearby, the right age range, a fitted mat and a quick check before play.

How much space does outdoor play equipment need?

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a use zone of at least 6 feet in all directions around outdoor home play equipment, covered with protective surfacing.

What should I check before each use?

That locks and folding joints are fully engaged, bolts are tight, ropes and seats aren't worn, and the area around the equipment is clear.
