The short answer

For a toddler, start with a low, angled climbing ramp like the one on a Pikler triangle set. For a wall gym that grows from age 1 to the pre-teen years, choose a wall-mounted Swedish ladder with a rock wall and rope wall, which takes almost no floor space. If you can’t mount to the wall, a freestanding climber with a mini rock wall works anywhere. For the backyard, choose a swing set with a built-in rock wall.

Install and safety

Climbing Wall Safety

Mount into studs

Wall gyms must be screwed into wall studs following the manual, never into drywall alone.

Check your ceiling

Choose a 79" wall gym for ceilings under 8 feet and a 95" wall gym for about 8 feet or more.

Add a padded mat

Cover the floor under the wall and past its base, especially on hard floors.

Clear the area

Keep furniture, toys and sharp corners away from the climbing zone.

Check the holds

Tighten rock holds and hardware regularly.

Stay close

Supervise young climbers and follow each product’s weight limits.

Pull-up bars for kids

Add a Pull-Up Bar to Your Wall

Doorway pull-up bars press against trim and frames that weren’t built for them. The Avenlur pull-up bar attaches to a Walnut, Betula or Neem Swedish ladder, which is already secured into your wall studs, so it’s stable and matches the rest of your wall gym. It’s made for kids 8 and up who want a bigger strength challenge, and it’s strong enough for parents to use for stretching.

FAQs

Climbing Wall Questions

What age can kids use a climbing wall?

Toddlers can start on low, angled climbing ramps from around 1 year old with an adult beside them. The Hazel Pikler set and the Walnut wall gym are both designed for climbers from 1 year. Taller vertical walls and pull-up bars suit older kids, and our pull-up bar attachment is made for ages 8 and up.

How do you install a climbing wall at home?

A wall-mounted climbing wall must be screwed into wall studs, not just drywall, following the manual. Our Swedish ladder wall gyms mount flat against the wall and come in 79" and 95" heights to fit lower and standard ceilings. If you rent or can’t mount to the wall, choose a freestanding climber with a rock wall instead.

Do I need a mat under a climbing wall?

Yes. Put a padded mat under any climbing wall, especially on hard floors, and extend it past the base of the wall. Avenlur makes playset mats sized for many of our climbers.

What is the difference between a rock wall and a Swedish ladder?

A rock wall uses molded holds on a flat or angled panel, so kids pick a route and work on grip and problem-solving. A Swedish ladder uses evenly spaced wooden rungs, which are easier for beginners and great for hanging and stretching. Many wall gyms, like the Walnut, combine both with a rope wall.

What is a rope wall?

A rope wall is a climbing net stretched across a frame. It moves under a child’s weight, which builds grip strength, balance and coordination in a way a fixed ladder can’t.

Indoor or outdoor climbing wall?

Indoor climbing walls give kids a place to climb all year, especially in winter. Outdoor climbing walls are usually part of a backyard swing set or jungle gym. Many families have both.

Can adults use a kids climbing wall?

Some can. The Walnut holds 220 pounds per person and the Neem holds 250 pounds per person, so parents can use them for stretching and exercise. Always check the weight limit for each product.

Can I add a pull-up bar to a climbing wall?

Yes. Our pull-up bar attachment fits the Walnut, Betula and Neem Swedish ladders. Because the ladder is already secured into wall studs, it’s more stable than a doorway bar.
