The short answer
The best outdoor play equipment mixes active play and imaginative play. A swing set with a climber covers swinging, sliding and climbing in one footprint. Add a playhouse or mud kitchen for pretend play and a water table or sandbox for sensory play. For toddlers, choose low, compact pieces; for older kids and bigger yards, choose taller climbers, monkey bars and more swings.
Types
Swings, slides, rock walls and monkey bars on one frame.
Low decks, short slides and easy steps for ages 1 to 4.
Clubhouses, cafés and playhouse kitchens for pretend play.
Pouring, scooping and digging at standing height.
Kid-powered excavators and wooden sandboxes.
Foldable climbers that move outside in warm weather.

A swing set with a climber gives the most play in one footprint: swinging, sliding, climbing and hanging. Add a playhouse for pretend play and a water table or sandbox for sensory play to round out the backyard.
Choose low, compact pieces: a water table, a bucket swing, a toddler playset with a short slide and a ground-level playhouse. See our outdoor playsets for toddlers guide for picks by age.
Compact pieces like the Palm toddler playground (82.7 x 42 inches), the Saffron playhouse kitchen (43 x 43 inches), a water table or a foldable indoor and outdoor climber fit patios and small yards. Leave clear space around anything kids climb or swing on.
Wood is sturdy, stays cooler in the sun than metal and looks at home in a backyard. Plastic is lighter but can fade and crack, and metal can get hot. Wooden equipment needs a seasonal check of hardware and finish.
Use wood mulch, wood chips, rubber mulch or sand at least 9 inches deep, or rubber safety tiles, under anything kids climb or swing on. Grass and packed dirt do not absorb falls well.
Plan for the equipment footprint plus at least 6 feet of clear space on every side, and more in front of and behind swings. Our backyard playground guide lists the play area each Avenlur set needs.
Equipment built for the outdoors can stay out, but covering or storing smaller pieces during winter and long wet spells helps the finish last. Indoor-only climbers should stay inside.
Yes. Swing sets, climbers and anything with swings or monkey bars should be anchored or installed on level ground exactly as the manual describes.
