A classroom table gets used for eight hours a day by children who lean on it, climb under it and wipe it down after every activity. Ours are solid wood with adjustable legs, so one set of tables covers a mixed age group now and carries over when the group moves up.

Choosing a Table Shape

A rectangular table seats the most children per square foot and lines up neatly along a wall or end to end for a long work surface. It is the default for group activities and craft.

A round table puts everyone in each other's eyeline, which suits discussion, snack time and shared work. A 36 inch round comfortably seats four young children, five at a push.

A square table is the flexible option for smaller rooms. Two pushed together make a larger square, four make a block, and apart they work as individual stations.

Getting the Height Right

The rule is simple: feet flat on the floor, thighs parallel to it, tabletop at about elbow height. Too high and children perch and lean; too low and they slump over their work. Both show up in handwriting and in how long a child can concentrate before fidgeting.
